Behind the scenes of Aromatic Horizons: How expert insights are being transformed into a comprehensive educational journey for future farmers.
As the Aromatic Horizons project moves into its second quarter, the international consortium is working intensely on its first major milestone: the creation of specialized Training Modules for aromatic and medicinal plant (AMP) cultivation.
A Multidisciplinary Approach
What makes the Aromatic Horizons curriculum unique is its holistic design. Rather than focusing solely on botany, our experts from Türkiye, France, Slovakia, and the Netherlands are integrating four key pillars into the learning materials:
- Eco-Innovation: Sustainable soil management and climate-resilient farming techniques.
- Digital Skills: Utilizing digital tools for farm management and crop monitoring.
- Agri-Entrepreneurship: Turning a harvest into a business through branding and marketing.
- Technical Excellence: Advanced distillation and post-harvest processing methods.
Quality Over Quantity
During the recent virtual coordination meeting, partners reviewed the first drafts of the modules. “Our goal is to ensure that a learner in a rural village can follow these modules just as easily as a student in an agricultural university,” says the academic lead from the Netherlands partner. “We are simplifying complex scientific data into actionable, practical steps.”
The modules are being designed specifically for adult learners, utilizing non-formal education methodologies that encourage hands-on learning and critical thinking.
Local Flavors, European Standards
While the training remains unified, each partner is adding “Local Best Practice” case studies. For instance, the Alaca Public Education Center is contributing insights on regional aromatic varieties in Türkiye, while the French team is providing expert data on high-end essential oil markets.
What is Next?
Once the internal review is complete, the draft modules will be translated into all partner languages (Turkish, French, Dutch, and Slovak) in preparation for the upcoming Pilot Trainings.
The final versions will be hosted on our platform as Open Educational Resources (OER), making expert knowledge accessible to everyone, everywhere.
Stay tuned as we continue to build the bridge between nature and education!
